How to Choose a Microwave for a Tiny Kitchen
Measure once, buy once. What clearance numbers actually mean and which compact microwaves fit under a standard cabinet.
Most "compact" microwaves are compact on paper only. The number that matters isn't the box size — it's the box size plus the air gap the manufacturer asks for.
Measure the real space
- Measure from the counter to the underside of your upper cabinets. A standard gap is about 18 inches.
- Measure the depth from the wall to the counter edge, then subtract an inch for comfort.
- Measure the width between whatever sits on either side.
Clearance is not optional
Microwaves vent heat through the top and back. Blocking those vents shortens the life of the magnetron and can trip the thermal cutoff. Most models ask for 1–3 inches on top.

For RVs and dorms
Wattage matters as much as size. If you're on a 15-amp campground pedestal or a shared dorm circuit, look for models under 1000 W.
